Toward a Theory of Integrated Urban Ecology: Complementing Pickett et al

چکیده

The analyses substantially delineating “integrative studies of large urban areas as biophysical-social complexes” and the suggestions by Pickett et al. in “Beyond Urban Legends” (Bioscience 2008 58 139-150) provide an initial framework for a theory of urban ecology. This article intends to contribute to the project by: 1) improving the philosophical rigor of critical concepts and epistemologies; 2) making explicit the complementary theoretical and empirical work in urban ecology already being done that can be better integrated, for example, studies from outside the U.S. and uses of actor network theory; 3) bringing forward more disciplines and theories which successfully deploy modes of thinking, research procedures, and practices more adequate to the phenomena at all scales and levels of particularity, i.e., micro, phenomenal, macro, to fill in some of the empirical gaps in the middle, specifically those having to do with human values and the richness of the everyday lifeworld. In addition to what is available within complexity theory itself, chief among the approaches to be utilized are phenomenology, ethnographic thick description, and actor network theory.

Ant Diversity in the Urban Mosaic

Urban Ecology has come to the forefront of ecological studies in an attempt to further understand what patterns of biodiversity are present within urban environments. Urban Ecology looks to use the many principles of ecology and apply them to the ever expanding cityscape to understand the roles the physical environment in urban landscapes play on species assemblages (Pickett et al. 2008). Citie...

Urban ecology: advancing science and society

www.frontiersinecology.org © The Ecological Society of America I proposing the ecosystem as an organizational framework, Tansley (1935) explicitly included the effects of humans. When asking, “Is man part of ‘nature’ or not?”, Tansley concluded that “human activity finds its proper place in ecology”. Nowhere is the human–nature interface more unmistakable than in urban ecosystems, and urban eco...

Grand challenges in urban ecology

The field of urban ecology has seen a major expansion in the last two decades. As the world rapidly urbanizes, human settlements constitute one of the few ecosystems on earth that are significantly increasing in their extent. As a result, interest from both the scientific community and society at large has turned its attention to the functioning of cities and their impacts on larger regions, gl...

Integrating restoration ecology and ecological theory: A synthesis

Restoration ecology would be easier in a world of linear, deterministic, ordered, predictable change tending toward stable equilibria. In such a world, many restoration projects would require only that the restorationist give a degraded or damaged ecosystem an initial push, and then stand back and watch the system heal itself. But this is not the world that most ecologists believe we inhabit (B...

Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology: A Critique

The goal of this paper is to critically evaluate Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology (AEE) as a paradigm by utilizing the method for theory framework developed by Pickett et al. (1994). While AEE can contribute in some ways to our understanding of human behavior through methods and techniques derived from neoDarwinian theory (as well as current approaches in animal behavior and decision theory...
